Kyuhyun always thought of the date with Zhou Mi as the date that changed his life. Even though Zhou Mi wouldn’t speak to him at school on Monday morning, he was not sorry that he walked out on the tall guy. In fact, walking out on Zhou Mi gave him the sense of being able to control his own destiny in a way that he had never experienced before. He used the week that followed as a week to examine his life and to see what he was doing wrong.
He gave a lot of serious thought to his relationship with Lee Sungmin. In fact, he spent more time thinking about SUngmin that perhaps ever before, but his thinking was tinged with new maturity and seriousness.
By the end of the week, he had definitely decided that no matter how attractive he found Sungmin, he was through chasing him. That Friday night when he learned that Sungmin and Eunhyuk were double dating with Siwon and Donghae again, he smiled and said, “Have a great time.”
Whan Sungmin asked, “How about you? You got a date?” Kyuhyun shook his head quickly and said, “No, but I’m going to be very very busy watching Count Dracula on TV.”
He was proud of himself because he actually had a good time that evening and didn’t think much about Sungmin at all. Maybe I’m finally becoming independent, he congratulated himself.
Sungmin and Eunhyuk spent the next Saturday and Sunday practicing a routine for their dance club, and Kyuhyun was even prouder of himself because he didn’t find even one excuse to go out and join them. Absolutely determined that his new independence was going to be a permanent part of his personality, he called Ryeowook, and they went out on Saturday night to the roller-skating rink. On Sunday afternoon, he went for a long bicycle ride down along the lake and into the park. He had a happy day, and as he came home in time to prepare dinner for the family, he scolded himself for having wasted the whole summer mooning over Sungmin when he could have been out having a good time.
That evening at dinner, Sungmin complimented Kyuhyun on his marvellous chicken casserole and then said, “How about a game of Scrabbles, Kyu? I haven’t seen much of you all week.”
“No thanks,” Kyuhyun said airily. “I have to finish my English paper. It’s the first one of the year, and I want to make sure I do a good job on it.”
Sungmin looked surprised at Kyuhyun’s light-hearted refusal, and Kyuhyun thought that he detected a touch of disappointment as well. In the old days, his heart would have grabbed at any hint of interest on Sungmin’s part, but now that he was the new, cool Kyuhyun, he wasn’t dependent on what Sungmin thought of him.
Kyuhyun was in his room working on the report when his mother called him to the telephone. He was surprised to hear Zhou Mi’s voice on the other end of the phone. Zhou Mi said, “Hi, Kyuhyun. I thought we might try again. Want to go out with me tonight?”
“No,” Kyuhyun said, as definitely as he could. “I’m busy this evening.”
“Well, how about tomorrow night?” Zhou Mi asked.
“I’ll be busy then, too,” Kyuhyun said quickly.
“Tuesday?”
“Sorry.”
“Wednesday?”
“No, Zhou Mi. I won’t be able to go on Wednesday.”
There was a long pause, and then Zhou Mi asked in a small voice, “Does this mean that you don’t want to go out with me at all?”
“I’m sorry, Zhou Mi,” Kyuhyun said firmly. “You were pretty crummy that Saturday night.”
There was another long pause, then Zhou Mi said in a voice tinged with respect, “I’d like to call you again in a few weeks, if you don’t mind, Kyuhyun. See if you’ve changed your mind. Would that be alright?”
“I don’t expect myself to change my mind, Zhou Mi. Bye.” Kyuhyun said, putting the phone down gently. He turned and almost bumped into Lee Sungmin, who had obviously been standing beside him listening to the whole conversation.
Kyuhyun said, “Sorry,” and started to duck away from him, but Sungmin leaned forward and put his arm up against the wall so as to block Kyuhyun his escape.
Kyuhyun was breathlessly aware that Sungmin was too close. He might as well have been touching him.
“Hey, Sungmin hyung, move away will you.”
“You could easily push me, Kyu” Sungmin said. And then he smiled as though to say it was a game. He asked, “Who was that on the phone?”
Kyuhyun started to tell him it was Zhou Mi. Then he shook his head. He said, “Sungmin, I’m not going to tell you who it is because it’s really not for you to know. I don’t mean to be rude, but Leeteuk hyung and Eunhyuk hyung are all the big brothers I can handle. I appreciate the fact that you’re concerned about me, but I will have to get along without your advice from now on. I am growing up, and I’m more independent than you realize.”
Sungmin wrinkled his forehead and seemed to think over what Kyuhyun had said to him. His expression was one of puzzlement, hurt, and curiosity. He said after a minute, “I guess you’re telling me it’s none of my business. Huh, Kyu?”
“Something like that,” Kyuhyun admitted.
Sungmin dropped his arm away from the wall, and Kyuhyun turned to duck away from him. but Sungmin pushed him against the wall and raised his arm to hold Kyuhyun’s chin and tilt his face towards his. Sungmin tiptoed and brushed Kyuhyun’s lips with his own. Then he kissed Kyuhyun on the cheek and whispered in his ear, “Goodbye, Kyuhyun. I guess you’re all grown up now. I’m going to miss you.” With that, he turned and walked away from him.
Kyuhyun stood in the hallway, his lips trembling from Sungmin’s kiss, his cheeks burning from his touch. His feelings were a mixture of sadness and delight at Sungmin’s obvious recognition that he was, indeed, growing up. He whispered softly, “Goodbye, Sungmin. I love you.” With that, he turned and went back to his room.
---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- --
He knew now that he had finally broken Sungmin’s big brother attitudes. He had convinced him that he was an independent person. But it didn’t feel as good as he’d hoped it would. It felt like a loss. Sungmin’s kiss told him that he’d hurt him terribly. Sungmin would feel the same about him, and Kyuhyun would miss his warm concern. Though he was glad to have achieved his hard-won independence, he was dismayed and saddened by the loss of Sungmin’s brotherly love.
Suddenly, Kyuhyun was frightened. For just one moment, he wished with all his heart that he could be a liitle boy again. But he knew it was too late.
From that moment on, Sungmin treated him with a new respect. He was friendly, but there was a distance and a coolness in their friendship that had simply never been there before. Kyuhyun was sorry about that, but at the same time, he was glad that the respect was there.
It seemed to Kyuhyun that Eunhyuk hyung’s attitude changed at the same time that Sungmin’s did. He acted more like Leeteuk hyung. Though the teasing and the good times were gone, so were the bossiness and the nagging.
---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- --
Kyuhyun sat for a moment on his bed. He couldn’t concentrate on his English paper. Now that Sungmin was not treating him like a younger brother anymore, Kyuhyun noticed something strange about him. He didn’t want to think too much of it, since it might be his heart making him see things, but Sungmin was acting unlike himself.
Kyuhyun couldn’t help but notice that Sungmin was arranging his life so that he was in the Cho’s living room every night at seven. It was because Zhou Mi usually called around that time. The tall guy was always trying to ask Kyuhyun out, and he refused him every time. Was it possible that Zhou Mi’s attentions were actually getting the reaction from Sungmin the Kyuhyun had tried so hard for before? Kyuhyun tried not to think about it too much. He was determined not to spend his life daydreaming about Sunmgin.
Even so, Kyuhyun couldn’t help but notice the way Sungmin watched him when he walked across the living room floor. It was impossible to ignore the way their hands touch when they did dishes together. In a hundred little ways Kyuhyun was aware of a certain electricity that was snapping during these evenings. He didn’t really trust his perceptions, though.
It was a week after Kyuhyun noticed these things before anything important happened between them. It was afternoon, and he was sitting at the kitchen table. He’d left school early to go to the dentist and he was home when Sungmin and Eunhyuk came in.
Eunhyuk asked Sungmin, “Are you sure you don’t want to come with me?”
Sungmin shook his head, saying slowly, “I’ll stay here and help Kyu with his homework.”
“Okay,” Eunhyuk said. “I’ll be back in about an hour. But I don’t know why you don’t want to come with me. It’s a nice day out.”
Again, Sungmin shook his head and drawled, “No, I’ll just stay here and keep Kyu company.”
Kyuhyun sucked in his breath and tried to keep his heart from pounding as he realized that it was finally happening. For the first time, Sungmin was making an obvious choice to spend time with him.
When Eunhyuk left, Sungmin pulled up a chair beside Kyuhyun and said in a soft whisper, “I hope I’m not keeping you from anything important.”
Kyuhyun smiled and tried to keep his voice calm as he answered, “Of course not. I’ve got another whole week on this English project. I’m practically finished.”
Sungmin nodded his head in approval, saying, “You always were a good student, Kyu. I think that’s great.”
Kyuhyun blushed a little and he managed to say, “Thank you.”
Sungmin reached over and grabbed one piece of chocolate on the dining table and said, “Did your boyfriend send you these?”
Quickly, Kyuhyun shook his head and answered, “I know you’re talking about Zhou Mi, but he is not my boyfriend.”
Letting the chocolate in his hand go, Sungmin pursued, “But he did send these, didn’t he?”
“No, he didn’t. Mom bought them from the grocery store yesterday. You should try them, they’re not too sweet.”
Sungmin reached over and took a piece of chocolate, took a bite from it, then reached towards Kyuhyun, holding the half piece of the
chocolate near Kyuhyun’s lips. Kyuhyun’s heart began to beat faster as he realized that Sungmin wanted to feed him the chocolate in his hand. Nervously, he opened his mouth to let Sungmin put the sweet delight on his mouth, Sungmin’s finger gently brushing Kyuhyun’s lips in the process. Then Sungmin smiled and said, “I think you’re wrong. They are the sweetest.”
Kyuhyun didn’t know that to say. He was too stunned by the obviously suggestive comment from Sungmin. Was he imagining things or was Sungmin looking at him in an entirely different way?
Sungmin reached out and touched Kyuhyun’s face, coaxing him to lean closer, and Kyuhyun, seemingly hypnotized, leaned in gently kissed Sungmin tenderly on the lips.
The kiss seemed longer and stronger than any kiss he had ever had. Whether the kiss lasted ten seconds or ten minutes, Kyuhyun wasn’t sure. For a while it seemed as though time was truly standing still.
When Kyuhyun finally broke the kiss and leaned back, Sungmin sighed softly and smiled up at him. He said in a quiet voice, “You’re really quite a guy, aren’t you, Kyu? You’ve grown up.”
Kyuhyun tried to laugh as he said, “I’m glad you finally noticed.”
Was he wrong or did Sungmin look slightly disapproving as he nodded his head and said, “I’ve noticed for some time now.”
Kyuhyun couldn’t contain it anymore, this was his chance to get closer to Sungmin so he impatiently asked, “Do you have a date this Saturday night?”
“No,” Sungmin whispered, obviously surprised.
“Do you want to go to the movies with me?” Kyuhyun asked, hoping for the best.
“Yes,” Sungmin answered, a bright smile displayed on his beautiful face, “Yes.”
